Mostly everybody fears public speaking.
Everybody gets a bit shy when doing something new for the first time.
But, this is not social anxiety. Social anxiety is when your brain is chronically impacted by a constant loop in your mind, body, nervous system, that keeps you irrationally fearing being judged and never relating to others socially, despite objective proof.
For those of you who face this, you know itās not as simple as:
Just ābe yourselfā or āspeak up more.ā
Iām not sure about you but, I had to build myself from scratch brick by brick, layer by layer to climb out of my social anxiety and get my life to be mine.
Since then, towards the late end of 2018 as I started to speak on my story, I started to get invited to speak at events, conferences, and various stages around the USA.
What I learned is I absolutely love speaking, but I had no idea until I did.
For those of you who experience social anxiety but want to speak, hereās what to knowā¦
1. Many Great Speakers Today, Faced Social Anxiety Yesterday
I faced social anxiety for most my life to becoming a public speaker on TEDx stages, speaking next to amazing leaders. People see me today as a confident podcast host & public speaker but donāt see the decade(s) of social anxiety, low self-esteem and poor mental health.
People think you either have it or you donāt.
False. It's actually a skill to be crafted.
Truth is some may be impacted from natural circumstances but this is something you learn.
You learn how to use your voice.
You learn how to speak up and stand for something.
You learn how to be courageous and do it even if youāre afraid.
You learn how to communicate with others.
You learn how to scale that communication to bigger and bigger stages.
All these things are learnable & not a result of tremendous luck or smooth genetics.
2. Public Speaking Isnāt You vs Others, Itās You vs You
An important dynamic I had to understand is my issue isnāt other people.
My issue isnāt other people judging me.
The issue is my mind thinking that other people will judge me.
Realize that, and create a plan of action to manage your mind, focus on what you can control and eventually social anxiety slowly fades and loses itās power over your life.

3. Tackle Social Anxiety Off Stage, To Be You On Stage
Actively working on social anxiety, when in the middle of facing social anxiety is quite possible the worst strategy that will leave you bruised and in pain for years.
Trust me, I did this for almost a decade.
What I learned is..
You are entering an environment, that the enemy (social anxiety) has been training in for years and years where you will almost always be outnumbered, out strategized, etc.
Whether itās speaking on a stage or otherwise, you must understand the key to victory comes in preparation. What you do when you wake up first thing in the morning and your habits & lifestyle you participate in every single day.
Tackle social anxiety before it gets triggered, and you will have more leverage.

4. Believe it or Not, Help Is Out There..
I talk to and help people who have social anxiety all day, itās my job.
What often happens, same with myself a while back, is you learn certain coping skills to not let social anxiety kill you, just so you can survive until the next day.
It could be anything from:
- talking about the same thing again and again
- hiding in the bathroom or leaving the area
- pulling out your phone for the entire time
- getting drunk or buzzed with alcohol
- getting emotionally disturbed and need to have a tantrum
The unfortunate part about these coping mechanisms, is they donāt help in the long run. If anything all of these on the list require avoidance, which fuels anxiety even more, making it an even bigger badder monster on the inside.
Some simple things you can start to do that actually work:
- Supplement with Magnesium and/or L-lysine and L-arginine - study.
- Eat a healthy balanced diet with an emphasis on dietary fat - study.
- Try doing regular mindfulness meditation - study.
- Try a combination of breathing & yoga exercises - study.
