Jay Shetty, if you don’t know, is a cultural icon, and for good reason.
I remember being in my college dorm room in 2016 and discovering meditation and the power of the mind through his work via viral Facebook videos.
Fast-forward to 2020 and I’m sitting down with him alone, for an hour.

Jay Shetty on Shyness
“I grew up painfully shy. Nobody looked like me where I grew up in London.”
Jay tells me his origin story of him presenting for the first time in school and being made fun of and having a socially traumatic experience as a kid.
What helped Jay?
His parents forced him. His folks made him try out for dance recitals and sign up as a telemarketer which helped him at a young age form communication skills and deal with rejection.
He jumped in young at a career with sales and learned through his employer, and team, over the years through fighting risks.
It’s not an uncommon story. But, what sticks out from my conversation?
Jay told me when it comes down to shyness, there are 2 main parts.
Learning communication skills.
The Content of what you are actually saying.
Even if you are the world’s best communicator or develop the best communication skills….
You must have something to stand for that will give you a bigger reason to stand up, and take a risk and say something! Without the bigger purpose, you won’t be ultimately confident in the long term.
Now, it’s your turn.
What’s your bigger purpose?
What’s your reason for standing up and speaking?
It’s okay if you don’t know it, but you have to try.
Hint: It’s gotta be bigger than you.
Send me an email and let me know your purpose or work-in-progress thoughts…
