What do you do when social anxiety strikes?
Iāve developed a simple yet powerful acronym to reduce social anxiety at the moment and bring your brain and present mind back from the clutches of doom.
You ever heard of someone texting āBRBā like be right back?
This works the same way but instead of talking to someone else, youāre talking to anxiety and your mind together.
BRB.
1. B - Breathe.
Focus and try to put all your attention on the physical sensation of your breath flowing in and out of your body. This is the quickest way to reduce anxiety.
2. R - Realize youāre not being attacked.
Part of the reason why social anxiety activates is to get ready for a potential threat, someone judging you, criticizing you, etc. When you tell yourself youāre not being attacked and your safe, combined with your breathā¦ this helps calm your body down.
3. B - Brain bring it back.
The last B in this acronym is for Brain Bring it Back. This is to help you distinguish between social anxiety and you. Many people who face socially anxious moments start thinking itās them. When in reality social anxiety is a brain health condition. Remind yourself you are not your social anxiety, and bring it back to your true self.
